Description

The Flyer-class was a type of Federation Starfleet heavy shuttlecraft in operation from at least 2381. The class was based on the design of the Delta Flyer and Delta Flyer II, which was designed and constructed by the crew of the USS Voyager while that ship was stranded in the Delta Quadrant.

The hull of the Delta Flyer-class is highly aerodynamic, and is composed of tetraburnium alloys with parametallic plating. The warp nacelles are variable geometry, reflecting the warp drive system of the Intrepid-class. The layout is fairly conventional - a large cabin occupies the front portion, with the engineering section aft feeding nacelles to port and starboard. The EPS conduits in the plasma manifold are isomagnetic, minimizing power losses and increasing engine efficiency. There is a small cargo bay and transporter system installed in the shuttle, along with the various systems usually associated with a vessel of this type. The area where the Delta Flyer-class differs most from Starfleet designs is in the defense systems. The unimatrix shielding was developed by Lieutenant Commander Tuvok, Voyager’s chief security/tactical officer, while the weapons array developed by Seven of Nine, who was rescued by the crew of Voyager, is based on Borg technology and includes photonic missiles.
